Lighting the Path to Tranquil Spaces

The project brief outlined the exploration of shape, form, and proportion by designing and making a pendant lamp. Stiria offers a biomimicry approach, and the layered design allows for a soft, calming diffused light.

Emitting a soft, diffused light, Stiria creates an ambiance of serenity and warmth in any room. Casting a soothing aura, reminiscent of icicles glistening in the moonlight, the lotus - inspired lampshade transforms any space into a serene sanctuary.

Abstract biomimicry is a central element of Stiria’s design. Layering in nature, as well as the patterns it creates, were the primary focus of initial research and inspiration, triangular inclined shapes in particular.

Triangularly inclined shapes served as the primary focus of form exploration. This included triangular “S” shaped relief patterns, both with individually cut-out elements and continuous trials, using various GSM paper types, examining its relationship with light diffusion. An enlarged pattern on a pentagonal bifrustum base proved too time-consuming considering the time constraints of the brief, and there wasn't enough focus on form.

Initial lamp concepts strayed too far from the original biomimicry approach.

Returning to the sketching board allowed reassessing the desired visual resemblance to nature. Transforming triangular shapes in nature like icicles, petals or animal patterns, into an abstract shape allowed for clarity in the design.
